Self-Determination Program
Build confidence, independence and skills for everyday life.
At Playrite with Atara, we believe that every child has the potential to grow, connect, and thrive when given the right told and support.
Through California's Self-Determination Program (SDP), we offer individualized, occupational therapy-based services focused on building meaningful skills for everyday life.
1
Social Skills
Meaningful relationships are an important part of childhood. From joining a game on the playground to navigating conversations, working cooperatively with others, and developing friendships, social experiences create opportunities for connection, confidence, and personal growth.
At Play Rite, we help children develop the skills to navigate social situations in ways that feel comfortable, authentic, and meaningful to them. Through interactive games, role-playing, shared activities, and real-life experiences, we work on conversation skills, turn-taking, cooperation, perspective-taking, personal boundaries, and social problem-solving.
We also support children in recognizing and expressing emotions, communicating their needs, managing frustration, navigating disagreements, and building the flexibility needed for successful interactions.
Our goal isn't to change who a child is — it's to help them feel confident being themselves, develop meaningful friendships, advocate for their needs, and experience the joy of connecting with others.
2
Sensory Regulation
For some children, everyday experiences like loud noises, unexpected transitions, busy environments, or certain textures can feel overwhelming. Others may constantly seek movement, touch, or sensory input to help their bodies feel organized and ready to participate.
At Play Rite, we help children better understand their individual sensory needs and discover strategies that work for them. Through movement, play, calming techniques, and meaningful sensory experiences, we support the development of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and coping skills.
Our goal is to help children feel more comfortable, confident, and in control as they navigate daily routines, new experiences, and the world around them.
3
Motor Development
From holding a pencil and using scissors to climbing, balancing, and participating in playground games, motor skills play an important role in how children explore, learn, and engage with the world.
At Play Rite, we use purposeful play and engaging movement-based activities to help children strengthen coordination, motor planning, body awareness, balance, and fine motor control. Whether we're working on handwriting, improving hand strength, developing bilateral coordination, or building confidence with physical activities, our focus is always on making learning fun and meaningful.
By developing these foundational skills, we help children feel more capable and confident participating in school activities, play, self-care routines, and the everyday experiences they enjoy.
4
Daily Living & Independence
Everyday routines are filled with opportunities for children to grow, develop confidence, and become more independent. From getting dressed in the morning to preparing a simple snack or managing personal belongings, we help children build the practical skills needed to take a more active role in their daily lives.
Through hands-on practice, individualized strategies, and step-by-step guidance, we break down everyday tasks into manageable, achievable goals. We focus on helping children feel capable, successful, and proud of what they can accomplish — encouraging greater independence at home, at school, and beyond.
